The fire, which started around 5:30 p.m., Thursday, May 16, was first reported as a tractor fire, but when East Fishkill firefighters arrived on scene they found the 3,500-square-foot home was engulfed in smoke and flames, said department officials.
The fire reportedly destroyed about 90 percent of the home, but the two residents were able to escape unharmed, said a GoFundMe account set up to help the homeowners.
The GoFundMe page is attempting to raise money for the family to replace some of their belonging, mostly clothing and other essentials. To date, almost $2,500 of a $5,000 goal has been raised.
East Fishkill was assisted by Beekman, La Grange, New Hackensack, Village of Fishkill, Town of East Fishkill fire department, EMStar Medics, and the East Fishkill Police Department.
The cause of the fire is under investigation by the East Fishkill Fire District Fire Investigation Unit.
